What's in a number?

May 2020

The number 4 supposedly connects mind-body-spirit with the physical world of structure & organisation; symbolising the safety & security of home and the need for stability & strength, based on a solid foundation of values & beliefs.

Well... this month I start my 4th year at Russell Bedford; confined to the safety & security of my home, patiently waiting for restrictions to be lifted, so I can do what I enjoy most; meeting our people around the world!

My first 3 years took me on 70 trips, visiting 50 offices in 40 countries, and we’ve achieved a great deal; 30% growth, winning awards, raising our profile to new heights.

So; I enter my 4th year reflecting on success, yet under these strange new circumstances with global uncertainty.

The number 4 is also associated with patience, loyalty & trust as well as seriousness, order & determination; a symbol of support, love & inner strength, persistent in achieving goals.

However; nothing’s a smooth ride! In Chinese, 4 is considered an unlucky number because it is similar to the word "death" (sì / sǐ)!

I shall choose to ignore that and focus on the positives; which is what we should all be doing right now.

Many thanks to my supportive team, global & regional boards, and our member firms for 3 fabulous years!

I look forward to the challenges and opportunities of Year 4!
