Managers & Young Partners Meeting 2018: Málaga

December 2018

The 2018 Managers & Young Partners Meeting was held in the commercial centre of Málaga, Spain from 30 November – 1 December 2018.

Those who arrived on the first night were treated to an office tour of Russell Bedford local firm, Idea Asesores, followed by an informal meal and drinks, which helped reacquaint colleagues who had met previously, while facilitating networking for those new to the event.

The following day, immediately after the welcome address, introductions were given by each delegate; which included almost 30 representatives from member firms throughout North America, Asia Pacific and Europe.

Anabel Salinas, representing the national group Russell Bedford España, presented an excellent example of how Russell Bedford member firms can implement the Russell Bedford brand successfully, using the Spanish group as an example. Anabel discussed Russell Bedford España’s plans for development in relation to the wider Russell Bedford International growth strategy, applying the Russell Bedford brand as widely as possible, and working towards creating an integrated network in Spain.

Russell Bedford CEO, Stephen Hamlet, followed with a network update, giving delegates a chance to hear what’s been happening at Russell Bedford around the globe in recent months.

Stephen then proceeded in leading a workshop and group discussion on branding and marketing, providing an opportunity to discuss how to use the brand more effectively and gain the most from network membership. Delegates learned how the brand of the network is much more than simply the logo and, although this includes taking advantage of Russell Bedford marketing resources, all firms must promote the very essence of the network; with top quality client service and an authentic attitude to client relationships.

After lunch, Angus Farr from Training Counts, a professional training and coaching provider, delivered a session on the skills, tips and techniques required to effectively negotiate; something which benefits us all, not only in our businesses but in everyday life. This was followed by a fun and interactive case study, where delegates had a chance to work in teams, putting their negotiation skills into practice.

To end a productive first day, delegates met for dinner, drinks and entertainment at Vino Mio; a contemporary restaurant in the historic centre of Málaga, with a spectacular terrace at the foot of Cervantes Theatre. Guests enjoyed a live flamenco performance while catching up with old colleagues and getting to know new ones.

Day two of the meeting was also led by Angus, who focused on team management; introducing new management style ideas, delegating and managing performance. The meeting closed with a debriefing on what was learned, followed by a buffet lunch and departures.

Speaking of the meeting, Stephen Hamlet said: “The Managers and Young Partners Meeting is undoubtedly one of my favourite events of the Russell Bedford calendar. I love to meet the rising stars within the network who don’t always have the opportunity to attend some of our larger global conferences. I’m a firm believer in nurturing our young talent and it’s at events like these that we get to hear directly from young professionals as to how they foresee the future of the profession. We can also learn a lot from them in regards to how they think it should progress! Thanks to all delegates for making this a valuable, energetic and extremely worthwhile event.”
